If He Dies…He Dies
The Rise The Fall
Friction
43:49 - 10 Tracks
This is kind of stoner metal meets melodic-ish hardcore metal type of stuff. It’s got many layers to it, got a great heavy/hard edge to it, yet still keeps a nice melodic groove going. Songs are kind of catchy, sludgey and yet still heavy. They almost have a Pantera feel to some tracks too.
Austrian Death Machine
A Very Brutal Christmas EP
Metal Blade
8:46 - 3 Tracks
This is a 3 song EP… It’s got a Christmas song… “Jingle Bells” and a Judas Priest Cover of “Hell Bent For Leather” And “Get to the Choppa” which is from the Total Brutal CD. You can’t ever go wrong with a good Priest cover and a well done Metal Christmas Song…. The ADM was one of the better CDs of the year, and this EP is a good cherry on top just in time for the holidays…
The Answer
Never Too Late EP
The End
17:06 - 4 Tracks
This is kind of a hard rock metal band. They are out opening for AC/DC… and have been compared to Led Zep and other early blues based hard rock stuff. There is something special about this… there are some big quotes from some big names on their bio sheet… Jimmy Page, Rolling Stone, Def Leppard… and you listen to it and hear Zeppelin ooozing out all over the place. It’s worth a little airplay!
Kill What I Adore
Whatever It Takes
Ironclad/Metal Blade
11 Tracks
This is kind of brutal metalcore. Big huge fat meaty riffs, some good other guitar shredding… Vocals are brutal, drums too. It’s kind of a sludgey brutal sound that occasionally breaks out in to a more clean metal sound, or into a traditional breakdown.
Various Artists
We Wish You A Metal Xmas and a Headbanging New Year
Armoury
51:13 - 12 Tracks

Miseration
Your Demons, Their Angels
Lifeforce
41:04 - 9 Tracks
This takes euro-melodic death and mixes it with some of the new wave of brutal US metal… And it sounds great! Melodic, brutal, technical and catchy. It features Christian from Scar Symmetry on vocals and it’s “for fans of Aborted, Hate Eternal, Behemoth and Bloodbath” Great stuff!!
Architect
Ghost of the Saltwater Machines
Black Market Activities
38:43 - 9 Tracks
These guys have that In your face stoner / punk / hardcore metal sound. They say it’s for fans of Converge, Baroness, Mastodon, The Sword, Coliseum… Meaning, they kind of sound like a pissed off Relapse band. A bit of a groove, nothing really too catchy, just loud, fast in your face metal. They’re good at the whole Motorhead + extra heavy type thing.
Science Faxtion
Pixel Dick
Mascot
51:40 - 13 Tracks
Bootsy Collins, Buckethead, Brain? Is this really given to me to play on a metal show? Yup. It’s more like some heavy hard rock stuff. It’s funky, catchy, got a lil bit of metal guitars… thanks to Buckethead. This might be something to let you hear on the Mosh Pit leading out of Something Wonderful or just something different and catchy… yeah, I said it was catchy a couple times.
Don Airey
Light in the Sky
Mascot
60:40 - 17 Tracks
You might know this guy as the most recent keyboardist for Deep Purple (since 2002) and playing keyboards on “Blizzard of Ozz” Well, this is a solo album from him and his friends. It’s mostly instrumental, a few tracks have vocals. It’s pretty much classic prog-rock sounding as you can figure… a solo album from a 60 year old rock keyboardist! Of course, one of my fav bands is Emerson Lake and Palmer, so I have a soft spot for this sort of thing… however, it is not metal, but could be cool for some background/filler music on the show!
Dance Club Massacre
Circle of Death
Blackmarket Activities
60:41 - 11 Tracks
Chicago’s own DCM… fast, almost black metal sounding… kind along of the lines of Black Dahlia Murder, Dimmu Borgir. Fast, technical, brutal, a good variety of vocal styles, a bit like Cradle of Filth too… with some of the keyboardy stuff. Production is good, and having more bands like this from the US is cool.
Leverage
Blind Fire
Blistering
52:59 - 10 Tracks
Some euro-hard-prog rock type stuff, their website calls them “old school melodic heavy rock with a shade of progressive flavour” They’re from Finland, and their description says it all… it’s decent stuff, great at what they do, and 10 years ago, we’d be all over this! The playing is great, the technical chops are there, guitarwork is classic and well, there’s nothing wrong with it… It’s just that the Mosh Pit has evolved into some brutal machine… haha But actually this is pretty decent, we’ll try and get it on the air for ya.
Jorn
Lonely Are The Brave
Blistering
45:47 - 9 Tracks
You might know this guy from a few different projects and playing Progpower USA a bunch. He’s got one of the most distinctive voices in this genre… The genre? Pretty much the same as Leverage above… “melodic heavy rock with a shade of progressive flavour” He kind of has the David Coverdale thing going on, songs are a bit catchy, nothing really heavy, but nothing too cheesey either, however, it is just on the border. You may hear this on the Mosh Pit
Twisted Sister
Live at the Astoria
Demolition
74:24 - 16 Tracks
Live CD and DVD… nothing really wrong with this, TS always has their spot in the history of metal, they don’t take themselves seriously and since their reunion, they’ve had some good shows and tours…. This set showcases that, it sounds live, doesn’t sound over produced or all corrected up or anything. The CD has a good set of their greatest hits and stuff… so there’s something for everyone to enjoy.
Born From Pain
Survival
Metal Blade
11 Tracks
Pretty much a hardcore/metal core release from these guys… you know, if you like Hatebreed, you’ll like these guys. Not much different from their previous release, just more of the metal anthem jump up and down hardcore stuff with breakdowns and catchy parts, and all that.
Mudvayne
The New Game
Epic
11 Tracks
The first couple tracks on here are like… WTF… ugh… you get to “A New Game” (track 3) and it picks up a bit, some songs are on the heavier side, but nothing like their older stuff. A lot of the songs are more melodic and almost ballad-ey. it’s mostly got clean vox, and well, it’s a good solid rock/ hard rock album, but not completely metal…. however, yeah, some tracks are good for the Mosh Pit.

Cellpan
3 Song Sampler
Vitruvian
6:50 - 3 Tracks
I’m not quite sure how to describe this besides maybe being a Rob Zombie/Cradle of Filth/Mudvayne mix. There’s a lot of stuff going on here, which makes it pretty cool, catchy and fun to listen to. It’s mostly industrial-ish metal, but some dani filth-like vocals from time to time and some cool heavy parts. The bassline and some nu-metal stuff reminds me of Mudvayne, and the Zombie stuff is just the heavy/catchy sound effect / jumpy stuff mixed in.
Kypck
Cherno
Century Media
54:42 - 10 Tracks
It’s been a while since “the west” has gotten a metal-ish release from any band from Russia. Of course Gorky Park is one of the big ones that people remember from the 90s… after that, for the lay person such as myself, I haven’t heard of much. This band, pronounced “Kursk” comes along and has a kind of dark sludgey doomy sound. The lyrics are all sung in Russian, it just seems to plod along kind of like the slower Type O Negative songs… it never really kicks it up a notch… it just is what it is.
Fear My Thoughts
Isolation
Century Media
50:41 - 11 Tracks
I recall really liking their last album, comparing them to older Soilwork… this CD… with a new singer, seems to have taken a new direction on the first track or so. However, the music kicks it up a notch, but the vocals seem to stay clean, and I guess the comparisons to Soilwork move forward to their newest stuff… but even less “metal” and moreso just melodic metal/hard rock. Some tracks to stand up to their older stuff, but overall… not really. It’s still pretty decent, but for what their last album was… #1 on the Mosh Pit chart for a few weeks, this one just isn’t up to what they used to be, and doesn’t stand out.
American Speedway
Ship of Fools
Prophase
35:57 - 12 Tracks
Beer swillin’ loud, hard rockin’ metal. They have the Motorhead, Zeke, Nashville Pussy fun metal thing going on. The short write-up that comes with the CD says it’s “punk meets metal attitude” and that is pretty much right on, but yeah, it does fit into the Zeke, Motorhead type of stuff. Not super catchy, but I’m sure with a few PBRs these guys only get better!
Cynic
Traced In Air
Season of Mist
34:16 - 8 Tracks
The band that everyone could never get enough of… Cynic! Their debut album, “Focus” was a genre defining album in the prog-death-metal realm. 15 years later they seem to have picked up a bit where they left off… but seeming to branch more into some experimentation. Some clean vocals, almost seeming like Porcupine Tree, then getting all crazy with some poly-rhythm stuff, and occasionally going into the deathy vocals here and there. There isn’t as much of an overall metal feel, but it’s still worthy of Mosh Pit time!
Robot Lords of Tokyo
Whiskey Blood & Napalm
RLOT Music
48:02 - 10 Tracks
This kind of has the Black Sabbath, Down, stoner metal thing going on. Songs seem to be pretty catchy, great riffage as their “influencers” seem to have. There’s a little hint of a southern hard rock influence here too. You’ll probably hear this on the Mosh Pit!
Bring Me The Horizon
Suicide Season
Epitaph
42:16 - 10 Tracks
The writeup that came with this CD likes to show off how this band can make screamo and metal fans agree… well, I can see that. This band has the metalcore chops and the metal chops to pull it off. Some of the guitar tone sounds like good ol Peter Wichers of Soilwork… the music is mostly screamo, which actually was like the old Soilwork too, right? Yes…. the riffs are catchy, there are the obligatory breakdowns… and the music stays pretty heavy for the most part.
Six Feet Under
Death Rituals
Metal Blade
49:13 - 13 Tracks
Six Feet Under are almost the AC/DC of Death metal… (unless they decide to just play all covers or a full on AC/DC album!) You always seem to know what you’ll get from them. A good sludgey doomy death metal groove album with some guttural vocals from Chris Barnes… and of course his screachy high pitch scream which he seems to like to do more and more these days. Of course this new one follows the SFU formula. Good solid catchy tunes… for some reason, to me, some of these songs just seem to have a nice punch to them and are just extra catchy… The drumming is extra good this time around… great fills! It’s good that these guys are still around making music in only the way they can!
The Faceless
Planetary Duality
Sumerian
31:41 - 9 Tracks
After seeing these guys on Summer Slaughter two years in a row and being completely blown away, I’m happy to have this CD in my hands. Off the hook technical death metal happening here. It sounds as if every guy in this band is playing as fast as they possibly can, but they still make a great cohesive mix of music. It’s totally brutal, blast beats, guitar melodies at the speed of light, growly guttural vocals, cool stop/start fillers and stuff. This is what brutal technical death metal is all about!
