Tiamat
Amanethes
Nuclear Blast
62:10 - 14 Tracks
These guys have been below my radar for a while, they put out an album, either I didn’t get it, or just kind of dismissed it… this time, in their first album in 5 years, it’s very well put together. It’s mostly pretty goth/viking/folk metal. Well, not so much folk, I guess I just add that because of the keyboards here and there. I’d have to compare them a little bit to Moonspell. To me, this album has a dark feel to it. I dunno, just the guitars and music feels dark to me… some tracks are heavy, others are not. You’ll hear something on the Mosh Pit!
Shai Hulud
Misanthropy Pure
Metal Blade
41:57 - 11 Tracks
These guys have been around a lot longer than Metalcore has, and they are, or have been pretty much a stereotypical metalcore band. WIth metalcore kind of not being what it used to be, like it was for a couple years, they have to evolve. As with the band/review above, this is Shai Hulud’s first studio album in 5 years. They have a pretty good metal and core thing going on. Vocals seem to stay abrasive, yet the music stays complex and melodic with the occasional breakdown. You’ll hear some of this on the Mosh Pit.
Axxis
Doom of Destiny
Locomotive
46:19 - 11 Tracks
A pretty solid power metal band from Germany. They’ve been around for 20 years, and have some of the symphonic/femetal vocal parts mixed in with some over the top power metal vocals. The music is fairly good solid metal. It doesn’t wank around too much, stays on target. The only wanking seems to be with vocals and it fits pretty good. You’ll probably hear this on the Mosh Pit!
Iced Earth
“I Walk Among You” EP
SPV
17:03 - 3 Tracks
The first official release to radio with the new Iced Earth stuff with Matthew Barlow back in the fold. I’m one of those bandwagon jumpers that think Mr. Barlow is THE voice of Iced Earth. No disrespect to Ripper Owens, but Barlow and Iced Earth are like chocolate and peanut butter. And, what better bonus to just this one song on this EP? Re-recorded versions of “Setian Massacre” and “The Clouding” with Barlow. New Iced Earth with Barlow? Yah, you’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!
Conquest
End of Days
Dark Star
49:47 - 11 Tracks
Pretty straightforward metal going on here. Production is pretty good, songs are kind of catchy, and true to metal! They’re from St. Louis, so a fairly “local” area metal band. You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!
Soul Embraced
Dead Alive
SolidState
13 Tracks
Another band that hasn’t had a CD in 5 years… These guys have reformed and having pioneered the Christian death metal/metal core genre, they’re back without missing a beat! The sound is more of a blackened metal, catchy songs, brutal sounding, and overall, just what you want to hear in Christian music… oh, whatever, it’s great music no matter what the lyrics are about.
MyChildren MyBride
Unbreakable
Solid State
10 Tracks
This is some good brutal-metalcore. Some nice huge meaty breakdowns, along with some great melodic riffing, and all in all good songs to headbang too. The songs are pretty catchy, choruses make you want to break stuff. You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!

Stormwarrior
Heading Northe
Locomotive
45:22 - 11 Tracks
With a name like “Stormwarrior” you could probably figure out that this is some euro sounding power metal…. yup, it is. No groundbreaking stuff here, a lot of guitar wanking, sing-a-long choruses, majestic interludes and that sorta stuff. You’ll probably hear this on the Mosh Pit… you know, cuz we haven’t actually had anything new like this in a while!
Kataklysm
Prevail
Nuclear Blast
44:08 - 10 Tracks
Brutal, heavy, technical-ish, everything you’ve come to expect from Kataklysm. These guys are pretty much on top of their game right now, and this album proves it. The songs are catchy, some have some slower interludes, but the payoffs are all there and make it all worthwhile. The songs are a bit catchy too, and the production is crystal clear! You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!
Moonspell
Night Eternal
SPV
44:18 - 9 Tracks
As with their last two albums, they keep putting out some great, relevant heavy albums. That phase they went through in the late 90’s… ugh. This new stuff sounds awesome… heavy, yet still maintaining the groove, the harsh vocals are great, and the occasional clean vocal still maintains their goth/doom vibe. They one one of the few bands that can mix the goth/doom with the death/borderline black metal sound. These guys’ last three studio albums (including this one), and adding to that, their re-recording of their earlier stuff on “Under Satanae” last year, Moonspell has hit their stride and are definitely worthy of airplay on the Mosh Pit!
Hatchet
Awaiting Evil
Metal Blade
42:00 - 9 Tracks
Metal Blade seems to be one of those labels that has a great wide variety of bands from all metal genres in their roster. Hatchet covers the new wave of American Thrash. Heck, they sound just like they’d be from the Bay Area in the 80’s. Well, they do have half of that right! They’re from the Bay area, and sure have the sound nailed down! Sounds like an older Death Angel or Vio-lence or Exodus, or whoever album. It does sound a bit raw. We love the thrash, so you’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!
Kryptos
The Ark of Gemini
Old School Metal
42:34 - 9 Tracks
Just about every band out there these days has to have some unique thing about them, right? Well, covering the last few months, I think this band might take the cake… They’re from India! It’s mostly straight-ahead thrash with some harsh death/black metal vocals. To throw a wrench in the fire, they do have some pretty good Black Sabbath influence too. I mean, if you are to be the first metal band from India so be signed to an International record deal, I would imagine you’d have influences from everywhere, and these guys do. They have a little something for everyone!
Ishahn
AngL
Candlelight
47:22 - 9 Tracks
The sophomore effort from the former frontman of Emperor. This album has some classic metal sound mixed with some gothy prog and even deathy evil! Track 3 features Mikael from Opeth, and the song even has an Opeth vibe. A lot of the album actually does, where it goes from some classic rock/prog then into some heavy stuff and back again. It’s pretty dynamic and worthy of airplay!
Deicide
TIll Death Do Us Part
Earache
42:12 - 10 Tracks
The intro track on here certainly doesn’t sound like Deicide. Almost proggy technical thrashy metal leading up to the first “real” track… the vocals certainly are classic Glenn Benton evilness, the music is actually pretty good and again, typical for Deicide, not as super speedy fast as a lot of brutal-core out there. Chalk this album up in the catalog as “another new Deicide” album. Don’t get me wrong, it’s good, just typical for them. There’s not much death metal like this anymore. Most bands try too hard or don’t try enough.
The Ottoman Empire
The Answer: Does Not Exist EP
LOCAL
25:42 - 6 Tracks
I’ve had these tracks before, as the band emailed them to me, but this is now an official EP release from them, and these guys are probably the best Metal band Madison or even Wisconsin has going for it now. Mix Dream Theater with Arch Enemy….I think that’s the best, quickest way to put a label on them. Awesome technical chops, guitar work is top notch, the production on this is really good. No reason these guys shouldn’t be signed to a major label right now!

36 Crazyfists
The Tide and its Takers
Ferret
42:56 - 11 Tracks
These guys have been around for a while, a metalcore band at the peak of metalcore, but they have been able to keep their sound fairly fresh. While still smack dab in the middle of the metalcore genre, they have something I can’t put my finger on that makes it not quite the same as all the other stuff. Great guitar work, not overplaying, the “emo” parts aren’t really all that whiney, just more singy I guess. The abrasive stuff and breakdowns are good too. You’ll probably hear this on the Mosh Pit!
Judas Priest
“Visions” EP
Epic
18:21 - 4 Tracks
Two new tracks from Priest! Their new concept album, Nostradamus comes out on June 17, this 2 song single has the title track as well as the song “Visons” The title track is an epic story telling song that really has just about everything in it, orchestrated type sounds, some keyboards, but of course all of the metal we love about priest. “Visions” is more of a straight ahead hard rock type of song. Not really anything you’d find on Painkiller! But hey, it’s Priest, you’ll hear it on the Mosh Pit!
Hail of Bullets
Of Frost and War
Metal Blade
57:36 - 12 Tracks
This is a euro metallic grungy death doom metal release. It’s somewhat of a super group, of the former Pestilence singer, Houwitser bass player, Gorefest drummer and both guitarists from Thanatos. I guess they have a bit of a Napalm Death/Exhumed sound. It is good, loud, in your face metal. Nothing groundbreaking, but a good solid release. You’ll probably hear this on the Mosh Pit!
Warrel Dane
Praises To The War Machine
Century Media
45:58 - 12 Tracks
You may have heard of this guy… frontman from Nevermore and Sanctuary. It’s similar enough to Nevermore for fans to like it, but yet different enough for it to not be a clone. I’m sure that’s what he set out to do. It’s mostly a collaboration with the former Soilwork guitarist Peter Wichers. You can hear that influence in it too. It’s definitely not as heavy as Nevermore, but still has the catchiness and still qualifies as metal in my book!
Burning Skies
Greed. Filth. Abuse. Corruption.
Lifeforce
28:20 - 11 Tracks
This is just about brutal-core, but really is a metal-hardcore type of thing. You can hear some black metal guitar sounds, great deathmetal vocals and sounds. The songs are quick, to the point, and all metal. You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!
Various Artists
Spinefarm Records Sampler
Spinefarm
55:59 - 13 Tracks
Spinefarm has decided to go full bore into being a US Record label. So they launched a sampler to showcase what they got going on and what they will be doing with reissues of Children of Bodom, Nightwish and others. There’s a good slice of euro-metal on here, and you’ll probably hear a track or two on the Mosh Pit
Seventh Seal
As Lives of One
Sinai Muzik
38:01 - 10 Tracks
These guys have the whole hard-rock, active rock radio sound stuff going on. While they seem to be good at what they are doing, the production is good, vocals mix well with the music, it’s just not a genre we play much on the Mosh Pit anymore. Maybe another station will play it?
Jon Oliva’s Pain
Global Warming
Locomotive
65:51 - 14 Tracks
Amazing how this guy and others in Savatage can put out so many of their own records, but yet, they don’t do a new Savatage album!? This CD has some great hard rock/metal songs, as well as some other more prog/hard rock parts. He’s got such a great metal voice, and when he gets that good abrasive scream going, it hearkens back to the old ‘tage stuff. You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!
Fall of Serenity
The Crossfire
Lifeforce
51:05 - 10 Tracks
These guys are more of a melodic death metal band… from Germany. Being on Lifeforce records, one may think that a band should be metalcore or something, but naw. This has almost some of that Gothenburg sound, but yet, good ol german death metal. They songs are heavy, and sort of brutal, yet nice n easy to listen to.
Coldworker
Rotting Paradise
Relapse
12 Tracks
Another Relapse band that isn’t really like Relapse, it’s more like something from Century Media… a Melodic Swedish death metal band. They call themselves Grind, but I’d have to say they are a bit more on the death/melodic side. The songs are catchy and kind of thrashy with a bit of Scandinavian brutality. You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!
Rob Gee
Says……
Rockridge
46:27 - 13 Tracks
I’m not quite sure how to describe this… I guess I’d have to say it’s kind of like Body Count…Hard Rock music mixed in with rap stuff. I’m not sure if this is worthy of some airplay, but it might be a great thing to play to transition between Something Wonderful (8p-11p on WORT) and the Mosh Pit
