This is kind of nu-nu-metal. Hints of Sevendust and Mudvayne in here. It’s not any sort of “core”, but it is fairly “accessible” There are some catchy parts, in most part, the stuff that sounds like Mudvayne… you know that bassy chugga sound. Otherwise, it’s just a hard/solid rock type of album.

This is some pretty good aggresive blackened death metal.   It’s heavy, in-your-face and catchy.  The songs have a good groove to them, and it’s easy to listen to.  The production is solid and crisp.  This CD’s release here in 2008 marks their 20th anniversary, so they have the experience to pull off a great album.  You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!

Actually, this is a little similar to the first album listed this week… Dropclutch.  Clean vocal, hard/solid rock stuff with a little bit of an edge.   The vocal layers get a little harsh, with that raspy almost 80’s/90’s metal screams.   Sounds weird, but it works.  Some good guitar solos, also hearkening back to some 80’s/90’s tones.   Most songs are fairly catchy.  Wow, not a lot of new stuff this week.  You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit.

Pretty brutal “brutal-core” here.   At first, I thought it was a super heavy Cavalera Conspiracy… but no… take that up a few notches.  This release almost provides a textbook demonstration of “Brutal-core”  Heavy chugga metal, with some melodic guitar parts here and there… abrasive vocals, and over the top drumming… with some mixed in technical chops and of course the foot stomping breakdowns.   They do this well, as I said, it’s textbook, and it’s something you’ll hear on the Mosh Pit!

This is a bit on the metal-core side.  It’s for fans of Coalesce, Botch, Converge, Snapcase, Cave-In.   Now I’ve never been a big fan of any of those bands, so, automatically, in pre-judging this, I’m not too excited.  Upon listening, yeah, not too exciting.  They have the metalcore thing going, it’s got a noise element in it as well.  There’s a lot of everything going on, and it gets a bit monotonous to me.  A bit like the heavier Neurosis stuff that I don’t care for.  But in any event, You’ll probably hear this on the ‘Pit!

This is more like brutal-metal, with some “core” mixed in.  Back in the day, this would have been called death metal, with the almost cookie monster vox, but add in a breakdown and a pinch harmonic on guitar and you have to add the “core” moniker.  The more I listen to this however, (since I write this stuff as I’m listening) I find it’s just full on metal-core.  Two vocal styles, screaming, and cookie monster, some melodic parts, blatant breakdowns, crazy weird meshuggah parts… yup, metalcore.   However, it’s still pretty decent, and has some different stuff than everything else.  Therefore, it’s Mosh Pit material!

Basically this is some good hard rock stuff, with some really good female vocals.  She’s got a mad-powerful voice, and the music is just run of the mill hard rock stuff.  The songs are pretty catchy and easy to listen to.  Production is solid for more of a indie-regional (NYC area) release.  These are some fun songs to listen to, so we’ll play one for ya!

These guys have the dual vocal style thing going on, the cookie monster and the scrowl…you know that abrasive screaaammm! The music is a bit dark, and a little experimental (meshuggah-ish) in parts. Overall, it’s pretty standard fast-ish metal… with doomy overtones. They also have the metalcore meedly guitar thrown in the mix too. There is a lot of different stuff going on here, and it does sound familiar, meaning, they draw from a lot of influences. They are a collection of just about all metalcore/brutalcore stuff all mixed into one. Not too shabby! You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit.

Yeah, about 10 years ago, this may have been pretty cool for the Mosh Pit (back when we broke Sevendust and Coal Chamber in the Madison market…), but metal has gotten heavier and moved more into brutality. While these guys are great at what they do… creating accessible commercial hard rock radio songs… they aren’t much what we’re doing on the Mosh Pit. I do believe there’s another station in town that plays this though!

I got to see these guys open for Exodus a couple months ago, and they were the ones that surprised me the most, I knew they would be good, but they were REALLY good! They played some of the stuff from this new album, so now that I have it in hand, it’s REALLY good too! The playing is just sick, the drumming is insane, the guitars are metal, yet still melodic and catchy, and the vocals mix in just right… The vox have just the right amount of abrasion… You’ll be hearing this on the Mosh Pit!

As long as COB sticks to their formula, they’ll probably never make a bad album. They don’t stray far from their formula on this album. Awesome riffs, that same keyboard accent here and there. Heavy, sick playing from Alexei. They have the wall of sound thing going on, and it’s great to have new stuff from them. You’ll definitely hear this on the Mosh Pit.

The former Dream Theater frontman is back withthe final part of his O3 trilogy. While no new ground is being broken, his band and his vocal chops make a solid prog-metal album. The sound IS very similar to the newer Dream Theater stuff. Therefore, I’d have to say, if you like Dream Theater, you should enjoy this stuff. The songs have the right mix of metal and prog, as to not get boring….it does tend to say more metal and not have much fluff. You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!

Another band of the new trend of metal these days… BRUTAL CORE!!! All out metal, mixed with a hardcore breakdown or two. This band mixes in some “break ups” (yeah, I made that up) as opposed to breakdowns in parts, where it gets all jazzy and melodic with guitar-only type stuff. It then goes back into crazy brutal stuff. As with a lot of bands in this genre, there’s not much new ground being broken, but they seem to do what they do well. You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit.

I guess this is Sweden’s answer to Motley Crue sounding bands? They are a hard rock / glam metal type of band. It’s good stuff for what they do, They seem to look and sound the part of those 80’s/90’s bands out of LA. However, it does sound a bit updated… not straight out of the 80’s. Probably not going to have time for this on the Mosh Pit… not quite “metal enough” for what we try and play lately.

Kind of a mid-90’s hard rock sound going on here. Not too bad, but not really Mosh Pit material. I guess a bit like old Saigon Kick or Warrior Soul? If there’s time or a request, we might play it. Also, they’re coming to the Annex soon with Tantric.

Similar to the Embrace the End… I guess this could be classified as “brutal core” However, this one is a bit more hardcore and slightly more melodic. There are some good chugga chugga metal parts… you may hear this on the Mosh Pit!

I have to say I wasn’t ever a big fan of these guys back in the day, but my musical tastes have expanded somewhat… and this release is pretty cool. It’s got some fast stuff, a bit of the stoner vibe, but mixed with some Pantera-esque stuff. Some great abrasive vocals and All in all, it’s a great come-back album, and very worthy of airplay on the Mosh Pit!

This week, the reviews are in alphabetical order… which so happens makes the best saved for last. First studio album in 10 years! The mighty Testament made it worth the wait…kinda. Well the album is great… but why it had to take so long was the sucky part. Every song on this CD is VERY listenable…there are no “skippers” here. This takes the best parts from Low, Practice and the newer stuff (less brutal) and throws it at your ears like they never took time off. We should just play this whole CD for you! You’ll hear all of it in the upcoming weeks and months… don’t worry!
