Cataract
Cataract
Metal Blade
46:29 - 10 Tracks
I can’t say these guys are really all that metalcore anymore. Since Metalcore as a whole genre has kind of gone by the wayside, replaced more with “brutalcore,” I feel that these guys have a bit of a leg up on any other “Metalcore” band. They do have a bit of the Hatebreed breakdown hardcore feel, but they just have some sort of abrasiveness that kicks it up to the next level. Once again, this is a band that will make you want to knock some heads in the pit!
Dream Theater
Greatest Hit And 21 Other Pretty Cool Songs
Rhino
Disc 1 (Dark) 79:51 - 11 Tracks
Disc 2 (Light) 58:38 - 11 Tracks
What a great title, eh? They had one “hit” “Pull Me Under” And what’s funny about it, is on this release, it’s remixed! This 2cd set is a good compilation to get a casual fan a good meaty slice of Dream Theater “Dark” (disc 1) and “light” (disc 2) Some of the longer tracks are even “radio edits” I think one would get the gist of what is going on in a longer track anyways. There are some other remixes as well, such as 3 tracks from Images and Words (the sound has become more alive on these without such “triggery” sounding drums.
In Flames
A Sense Of Purpose
Koch Records
12 Tracks
I’ve been a fan of In Flames for a long time now, yes, they were sooo awesome for Jester Race, Whoracle, Colony… I have to stick up for musicians here, as what, do you want the same album over and over? Times change, music changes, tastes change… and, well, things just evolve. In Flames has evolved into more of a melodic, catchy, more modern “thick” sounding band. Yes, the music seems “thicker” to me. A bigger bass line, to fill the bottom end, maybe a downtuned guitar too? I don’t know. They still have the melodic goodness that helped to shape the Gothenburg sound, and overall just seems more accessible. This new CD has just about all the normal elements that make up a great In Flames record. There’s nothing really super heavy on here, but it’s still great stuff!
Iron Steel
Devil May Care EP
Nipple Records
20:45 - 4 Tracks
This is somewhat of a joke band featuring Dave Ellefson, Morgan Rose, Rachel Bolan, Jim LaMarca (Chimaira) The songs are good and classic cheesey scream power metal, but yet still catchy and of course, being a joke band, the lyrics are funny. “Hail satan, 666 6 6,….” “burn this cross, stick it up your ass” You know, fun stuff like this. Well, we at the Mosh Pit are fans of for fun joke metal bands, and, even better, this project has some pretty good names involved. You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!
Isis
“Holy Tears” Single
Ipecac
21:06 - 3 Tracks
This is a bit spacey, ambient rock stuff. Kind of like 70’s jam rock. Some parts get into the area of stoner metal and beyond! (maybe some growly stuff for about 30 seconds), but for the most part, it stays pretty tame, and is something you can chill to. We might throw some of this on the air for a bit!
Origin
Antithesis
Relapse Records
10 Tracks
Another solid release from these guys. It’s a wall of death metal sound, intense guitars, vocals, and especially drums. It’s just fast, and over the top… but not too much! It’s just what an extreme metal fan should expect. You should hear this on the Mosh Pit!
Wykked Wytch
Memories Of A Dying Whore
Perish Music
57:14 - 11 Tracks
These guys (and girl) are kind of a gothic black metal with a similar sound to Cradle of Filth. You know, that super crispy, almost orchestrated music with some good shrilly vocals over the top of it? Yeah. Good stuff. But what’s neat, is that this band is from Florida and female fronted. She puts out some sounds that I didn’t think one human could make. While they aren’t breaking any new ground here, it is a decent release and it’s pretty intense… You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!

Black Tide
Light From Above
Interscope
This is mostly a hard rock with a few leanings towards metal. It’s kind of good ol fashioned hard catchy rocky stuff. Some cool riffage, great playing, and generally fun to listen to. Of course there’s always a catch, they do have a little bit of a gimmick. No one in the band is over 17 years old! You may remember them as the metallica-esque band on Ozzfest a couple years ago, or was it last year? Either way, it’s not too bad, and it’s worthy of a listen on the Mosh Pit!
Various Artists
WWE: The Music Vol. 8
Columbia
49:15 - 14 Tracks
I’m not a big wrestling fan, I can respect and understand what it’s all about. These are yet another collection of entrance themes for the WWE dudes and dudettes from RAW, Smackdown and ECW. Some are actual songs, some are just theme musicey stuff. Most of it is fairly accessible. However, Track 13, the theme for “Mr. Kennedy” is a track for the band Airbourne, who are coming to town in a few weeks. So you’ll at least hear this track on the Mosh Pit!
Dead Child
Attack
Quarterstick
47:35 - 11 Tracks
Kind of doomy, thrashy and gosh, I dunno. A little bit like Trouble if I had to pick a comparable band off the top of my head. I guess they are vocally a little bit like Kyuss. The songs are pretty catchy, have some great riffs and some cool thrash elements.
Dismember
Dismember
Regain
42:41 - 11 Tracks
Classic sounding Swedish death metal from a band that is one of the pioneers of this genre. It’s in your face, heavy and not quite melodic like the Soilworks and In Flames. This leans more toward the dark and heavy side of what you may hear from Hypocrisy. :) The production on this is a bit raw (seemingly on purpose) to capture the dark and evilness about it. It’s fairly doomy, but gets up to some good speed in many parts. With a history like what these guys have, how can ya not play it? (Plus it’s a decent CD)
Firewind
The Premonition
Century Media
45:19 - 10 Tracks
The buildup in the first track is just cool. Just a nice slow musical build-up right into some euro-thrashy prog metal. These guys don’t quite fit into the Primal Fear, Sonata Arctica of the typical formula prog/power metal. I think the vocals have a good edge to them and the rhythm section keeps it pretty “good” metal and not so “nerd” metal. While it’s not as edgy as Mystic Prophecy, I do find them fairly enjoyable…. with elements from all kinds of traditional metal mixed in. You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!
Various Artists
Voices of Rock MMVII
Locomotive
49:17 - 10 Tracks
Well, there was no info with this CD, it looks like it’s just a bunch of “voices” singing AOR type rock songs. Of course the internet is your friend. Check out their myspace page here: http://www.myspace.com/voicesofrock This isn’t something that I think we’ll break into on the Mosh Pit, but as always, if it gets more than a sentence written up here, if you request it, we’ll play it!

Bury Your Dead
Bury Your Dead
Victory Records
33:18 - 11 Tracks
Pretty good new release from these guys. New singer adds a good edge to the band that they didn’t seem to have before. It was pretty trendy in the past, you know with all that metalcore stuff. Now they just fit into the new wave of american metalcore. NWOAM? You know, where the music tries to sound like Meshuggah, but not as technical and more metal. Vocals are good and harsh, with the occasional clean harmonies, but not really whiney and emo.
Empire
Chasing Shadows
Locomotive
48:40 - 10 Tracks
Starting off, this is some run of the mill hard rock with good clean singing vocals, kind of the plain ol power metal/hard rock stuff. Reading up on them a bit, I see Tony Martin sang for them for a few albums, but now they have a new vocalist named Doogie White. He’s been with Rainbow, Yngwie, Royal Hunt. Anyways, these band members have some history in the 90’s hard rock scene with some fairly reputable bands. This recording is pretty solid, some great playing, catchy songs and great production. It is another one of those bands that pass for an updated “Whitesnake” You may hear this on the Mosh Pit
Immortal Dominion
Awakening
Fist Music
59:00 - 14 Tracks
This is a thrashy, deathy, black metal band. They kind of fit all sorts of genres here… that’s what seems to make them stick out a bit. A few layers of vocals in parts make it pretty cool. You’ll have an “anselmo” with some black metal and death metal screamgrowls going on to fill in the background. The music is a bit raw, but it maintains heaviness and a good groove. Some songs just go all out metal, others hold back a bit. It’s neat to hear a band that can do both and make it work without sounding too forced.
Jucifer
L’Autrichienne
Relapse Records
Female fronted hard rock with a punk edge, with some of that Neurosis-esque plodding along music. One song will be noisey speed/angry metal, one will be top-40-ish rock. There is a lot of this back and forth on here. It’ll be interesting to see if it works for them. This is probably an album that has to be digested as a whole, rather than a track at a time. You’ll probably hear some of this on the Mosh Pit
Korpiklaani
Korven Kuningas
Nuclear Blast
74:00 - 15 Tracks
This new album is not much of a departure from their previous works. Finnish folk metal that’s as catchy as can be. A pinch of polka and what I like to call “steerage” music. You know, a reference to the music they played in the lower decks of the Titanic from that movie. It’s bouncy, well produced, but it may just be a bit too corny for the mosh pit fans. We’ll try and get it on the air!
Ministry
Cover Up
13th Planet/Megaforce
55:52 - 12 Tracks
Ministry is retiring. They are going out with a fun bang. A covers album! Covers done only the way that Ministry can do them. These are mostly covers that are newly recorded, but there are a few from past albums thrown in for good measure. The songs stay true to the original, but with that classic Ministry sound. Since I’m a fan of covers, and of Ministry, I know you are too… you’ll hear this stuff on the Mosh Pit!
Red I Flight
The Years
Victory Records
36:58 - 10 Tracks
New debut release for these guys on Victory. I’ll have to say these guys fit in the Brutalcore vein of metal. Heavy, aggressive, fast, and kind of catchy. Some cool breakdowns, some black metal influences too. It’s loud and in your face. You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!
Sahg
Sahg II
Regain Records
48:40 - 9 Tracks
These guys are back with their original and logically titled follow up to their debut, I. As you recall, these guys are Norwegian metal and hard rock veterans teaming up to do a hard rock/stoner metal band. They do it well, it of course has some Sabbath references, however, unlike some of the other stoner metal out this week, the riffs don’t seem as meaty and heavy. This is a bit more melodic, and more of the “hard rock” than “stoner metal” It’s still worthy of some airplay, so you’ll be able to hear a track or two on the Mosh Pit.
The Sword
Gods Of The Earth
Kemado Records
47:55 - 11 Tracks
Critically acclaimed, these guys seem to be the buzz band lately. You know, that one that’s cool to say that you like? “yeah, I’m into The Sword, they rock” Well, in this case, it’s not a bad thing. It’s good, loud, stoner metal, songs are put together well, where they don’t ever get boring. You just want to drink some beer and see these guys live and be in awe at how they can do what they do so well. Again, it’s stoner metal and for fans of that type of stuff. The songs have some great riffs, drum fills and like I said, stuff all over the place that keeps it interesting. You will hear this on the Mosh Pit!
Unearthly Trance
Electrocution
Relapse Records
Pretty decent doom/stoner metal going on here. Definitely sludgey and plodding, yet still interesting. Some tracks do get going pretty quick, almost “punky.” I would have to say it’s something for fans along the lines of High on Fire and bands like that. They do fit in the Relapse mold, and I think it’s something you’ll hear on the Mosh Pit!
