Arch Enemy
Rise of the Tyrant
Century Media
48:32 - 11 Tracks
Well, you might already know that I’m a big fan of Arch Enemy, so it goes as no surprise that I think this album is awesome. The Amott brother’s shredding is insane, the drumming and vox are just as sick as ever! Some recent interview with Angela Gossow reveal that there are no vocal effects on here, just raw metal scowls (I’m sure there is limiting and compression, but no fancy pro-tools crap). This is just what you come to expect from these guys, and without any wussing out. You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!

Down
Down III: Over The Under Down
ILG
59:54 - 12 Tracks
I’m not going to say this is nearly as good as the first one. I mean, everyone does it, right? Well, I think it’s better than the 2nd one, but nothing can touch the first Down record. It does sound like a mix of all of the included musician’s influences all mixed together. I think Phil puts on a good performance, the music is as good as it can be… and well, these guys were due to make an album! You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!

Metalocalypse: Dethklok
Dethalbum
Williams St. Records
Disc 1: 52:25 - 16 Tracks
Disc 2: 19:38 - 7 Tracks (and a video)
Well, you might know the TV show, if you do, it’s pretty cool. It’s out there, but any metal fan should be able to appreciate this dark humor. This CD is all metal, Gene Hoglan is just sick on the drums, and who would have thought that a comic turned cartoon show creator could pull off this cool album. The lyrics are funny and the metal is straightforward deathy thrash metal. You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!

Nightwish
Dark Passion Play
Roadrunner
75:45 - 13 Tracks
When Nightwish puts out an album, they don’t hold back. A full orchestra, vocal chorus, the whole nine yards. It is quite the epic album. This is their first since losing Tarja, and Tarja who!? It’s got the euro-metal sound, and I have to say with all of the female vocals, it could be classified as fe-metal.It’s just full on with big orchestra and all out metal. I personally like the heavier parts, but as a whole this album has something for everyone. With this, After Forever, Epica, it’s a cool wave of epic female heavy euro-metal! You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!

Nuclear Blast Allstars
Out Of The Dark
Nuclear Blast
40:52 - 10 Tracks
This 2nd part (the first was “Into the Light”) of the Nuclear Blast All Stars features former Soilwork Axe-man Peter Wichers handling the musical duties. This features more of the heavier side of the Nuclear Blast Roster. Drums are handled by Dirk Verbeuren and Henry Ranta, both of Soilwork fame. Vocals are handled by a wide range of dudes… frontmen from In Flames, Hypocrisy, Wintersun, Scar Symmetry, John Bush!, Soilwork, Kataklysm, Death Angel, Sonic Syndicate and Mnemic. The music of each of the songs match the vocal style and bands that these singers come from. It’s a very solid, well put together CD, which you will enjoy hearing on the Mosh Pit!

Prong
Power Of The Damager
13th Planet/Megaforce Records
48:33 - 12 Tracks
This is a good solid release from Prong, kind of going back and regaining the sound of pre-Scorpio Rising… it’s heavy, crunchy and crisp as older Prong stuff was. It seems a bit more heavy than the recent stuff, then again, just about all music these days is heavier! Most of the songs are pretty catchy, of course there’s no “Snap Your Fingers Snap Your Neck” and well, there never will be. It’s good stuff, you’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!

Sappy Bell
Nightmare Chronicles
Corporate Punishment
34:43 - 11 Tracks
Weird name, not so bad CD. This is kind of run-of-the-mill heavy stuff. The vocals bounce between a clean vox chorus, but pretty good abrasive lead vocals. The production is good and punchy, it’s pretty much a metal-core-nu-metal genre band… but pretty solid. Due to sooo much other stuff this week, this one is a maybe!

Shakra
Infected
Locomotive
57:54 - 13 Tracks
A Swiss hard rock band, these guys have been around since 1998. They have the hard power rock sound with the raspy clean hair metal vocal sound with some plain ol hard rock music backing it up. It’s pretty good for what it is, but with all this other stuff out this week, it’ll be hard to work it in. Of course, if you want to hear it, call and request it!

Skeletonwitch
Beyond The Permafrost
Prosthetic Records
36:25 - 12 Tracks
This is another band from the recent school of bands going back to the old school of speed metal thrash! However, the vocals on this are more death metal-ey than say, Slayer, Exodus, Testament or Judas Priest as the bio sheet compares them to. The music is awesome thrashy riffin’ goodness. It’s a great mix with the thrash stuff and the deathy growly vox. This is something you’ll be hearing on the Mosh Pit!

Sodom
The Final Sign Of Evil
SPV
49:48 - 12 Tracks
This features a bunch of songs from their first EP re-recorded with their original lineup. While recorded in 2007, it still sounds pretty raw, which I’m sure is on purpose to capture the spirit of the originals. The other tracks that weren’t on the original EP are all songs that were written in that era, but were never properly released, so here they are re-recorded and all set to go for your listening pleasure! You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!

Meldrum
Blowin’ Up The Machine
Locomotive
40:55 - 11 Tracks
An all female meat and potatoes metal band… guitar driven, and seemingly influenced by Dimebag, they are alright. The main guitarist started out in a band called Wargod with Gene Hoglan, who guests on this CD along with Lemmy, and she was also in Phantom Blue (late 80’s early 90’s chick band). The music is fairly simple and straightforward. This is a maybe on the Mosh Pit.

Rammstein
Volkerball
Universal Republic
75:49 - 16 Tracks
A live DVD, CD and bonus DVD round out this fancy packaged live set from the Germans. The sound is good, the live mix is good, good enough to know what’s going on, yet live enough to know it’s live. I don’t have time to check out the DVD yet, but I’m sure that is way more cool than just hearing the audio. I mean, you can hear explosions and fire stuff… It’s cool, you’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!

Chiodos
Bone Palace Ballet
Equal Vision
38:34 - 10 Tracks
This was a CD that was supposed to get here last week, I just got it today. Normally I’d probably not do much with these guys, but they’re from the midwest and will be in town next week. They are probably more in the emo-core vein, but have some cool metal moments. The music is fairly complex and technical, and gets into some good ol screamo. You might hear this on the Mosh Pit!

Various Artists
Resident Evil: Extinction Soundtrack

Lakeshore Records
62:02 - 19 Tracks
I can’t say that I’ve seen any RE movies, but they sound tracks are usually pretty cool. It’s usually a good mix or some stuff. This one has a lot of remixes and metalcore. The metal focus of this CD though is Shadows Fall’s “Stupid Crazy” which is a bonus track from their newest CD. There are tracks from Chimaira and Throwdown, but just cuts from their newest albums. You’ll hear this Shadows Fall track from this soundtrack, but that’s about it.

Between The Buried and Me
Colors
Victory
64:12 - 8 Tracks
This release is more like a concept album or basically one big song divided into 8 tracks for easier digestion. It starts off like a Pink Floyd album, then builds up into brutality. Then it just takes of from there…. it stays fairly brutal, but the guitar work is more like prog-metal, it’s like, you put a metal-core band and Dream Theater them up a bit… you have this album, it’s got a lot of meedley guitar work, yet stays fairly brutal and heavy. The playing is technical, heavy and just solid throughout. Since this is a big long song, it’ll take a few full listens to fully digest. You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!

Hurtlocker
Embrace The Fall
Napalm
36:11 - 10 Tracks
Good solid heavy thrash metal. Nothing really new, just good solidly produced and executed metal. This is good meat and potatoes metal that you will hear on the Mosh Pit!

The Black Dahlia Murder
Nocturnal
Metal Blade
34:38 - 10 Tracks
They are back with their first album in 2 years. It almost reminds me of 3 Inches of Blood right off the bat with the screaming vocals, but then the blast beats and death growls come in and just make this all out brutal. The drumming is sick, the guitar work is sick, dang, this whole thing is just sick. If you like brutal borderline technical death metal, then this is for you… But you know these guys’ reputation for awesome live shows and their last albums were great, so this just carries the torch. You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!

Kosmos
Kosmos
The End
44:00 - 12 Tracks
At first, I thought I was listening to the theme from The Rockford Files, but no, it’s just kind of groovy 70’s prog rock sounding stuff. This featurs Away from Voivod and some other guys from other prog psychedelic bands like Tricky Woo, Paradise and Grim Skunk. It’s a bit out there, but it might be worth a mention and/or some airplay as some cool music to talk over!

Suicide Silence
The Cleansing
Century Media
44:02 - 13 Tracks
These guys are pretty brutal. They take thrash metal and turn it up a notch to just about death metal, well, yeah, okay, it’s death metal… okay in parts. There are screamy abrasive vocals followed up by all out cookie monster stuff. The guitars are all distorted and sound a bit like Dimebag, the drumming is brutal with some blast beats here and there. We played these guys a year or so ago when they had their EP out. Now they’re on Century Media and out to prove to everyone how brutal they are. They don’t have to try hard… they just are brutal. You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!

Till We Die
Pressing On
Screaming Ferret
52:51 - 13 Tracks
These guys have that “sound” of the new wave of nu-metal. With some emo clean singing vox, mixed with a screamo angry chorus here and there. The music matches. It’s pretty straight forward with some hints of something heavy and technical. You can hear the Tool influence as well as some melodic hard rock type stuff. This type of stuff is more well served by the big rock station in town, but we’ll try to work it in if we can.

Iced Earth
Framing Armageddon (Something Wicked Part 1)
SPV
69:03 - 19 Tracks
Well, what can you say about Iced Earth… This is the follow up to Something Wicked, their album from, what, 10 years ago? A long time in the making, and with Jon Schaffer being the #1 fan of Iced Earth, and well, being the driving force, you know he’s not going to release crap. He’s pretty much got another new lineup for this CD. They don’t mess around on this one either. Like the BTBAM album above, this CD will probably be better digested as a whole, but just track to track it’s pretty cool. It IS an Iced Earth CD, so you know what it’ll sound like. Ripper Owens is his normal great self and Brent Smedley, the old drummer is back and puts on a solid performance. You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!

Winds
Prominence and Demise
The End
55:23 - 9 Tracks
This is a bit prog-metal, more along the lines of heavier Porcupine Tree stuff, but maybe a bit similar to Dream Theater…. and in parts it gets pretty heavy, actually more reminiscent of Opeth! The vocals sound a bit like Maynard from Tool, but get to be brutal in some parts. The mix sounds a bit muddy to me, maybe I have to listen to it in my car (a nicer sound system). The more I listen to this, the more cool it is. We’ll find a way to work this into the Mosh Pit!

After Forever
After Forever
Nuclear Blast
61:23 - 13 Tracks
It’s been a little bit til we got some Fe-metal. These guys are a bit like Epica, but a little more concise. Most of the songs stay pretty heavy without so much effing around. It’s basically prog-metal with some black/death metal male vocals backing up the clean singing (soprano) talented female lead. You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!

Gotthard
Domino Effect
Nuclear Blast
73:51 - 19 Tracks
Pretty decent hard rock / almost power metal here. It’s got a bit of an 80’s feel to it, well, these guys have been around for a long time… As a matter of fact, they are the biggest selling band inside their home country of Switzerland. They get influences from Whitesnake, Led Zep, you get the idea. They do what they do well, and you might just hear this on the Mosh Pit!

Ministry
The Last Sucker
Megaforce
55:55 - 11 Tracks
Allegedly the last studio album from Ministry, this one doesn’t disappoint. It’s vintage Ministry, although, it doesn’t just jump out at you as much as their last one, but it’s still all pissed off. It has cool catchy riffs, and of course many politically slanted sound clips. This one seems a bit more raw than Rio Grande Blood, but, you know what? You can’t go wrong with Ministry. You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!

Destination: Oblivion
December Sun
Apocalypse Machine
61:02 - 17 Tracks
This is a bit of an industrial metal/experimental type band. Off the top of my head, it reminds me of Mushroomhead meets Marilyn Manson. Some tracks are cool, some take a long time to go nowhere. You may hear this on the ‘pit, if not, Something Wonderful (the show before the Mosh Pit 8p-11p on WORT) might like to check it out.

High on Fire
Death Is This Communion
Relapse
56:46 - 11 Tracks
They’re back with their first album in two years. The Stoner/Doomy metal masters don’t disappoint with this one, it’s aggressive, produced well, and provides a nice wall of sound to relax to (if you’re a good metalhead of course) There’s a bit of Slayer meets Clutch meets Mastodon and mixed in with good ol Motorhead. You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!

Machine Head
The Blackening and Beyond
Roadrunner
25:50 - 4 Tracks
This is one of those (rare these days) radio only EPs. I feel special for even having this! It’s released to raise awareness of their upcoming tour. It’s got A couple edits and live versions of “Imperium” and “Halo.” from The Blackening. You can’t go wrong with the lateset Machine Head album, therefore, you can’t go wrong with more from that album, especially live stuff. You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!

Himsa
Summon In Thunder
Century Media
45:44 - 11 Tracks
After a small intro, the guitars kick in, and I thought I was listening to some black metal song, they just had that certain “black metal” tone. Then the vocals kicked in to what Himsa normally sounds like, pretty good hardcore metal with the intensity turned up a couple of notches. The black metal, intense tone, along with some melodic death sounds, and even metal-core interludes all mix together to make this thing work well. You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!

Atreyu
Lead Sails Paper Anchor
Victory
40:47 - 11 Tracks
They start off each track seeming to be all straightforward metal, which is pretty good, but then they get into their metal-core singalong sound, which makes them seem all emo and happy. I feel like this release is the most “hot topic” of all of their albums. We’re looking for something no so whiney on the Mosh Pit these days, so this is a maybe.

Invitro
When I Was A Planet
Gridiron
36:03 - 14 Tracks
This is actually the full album, after a few teasers and stuff like that over the last year. This is former Soulfly and Snot guy Mikey Doling’s band. We’ve played some of the other tracks from this earlier. It’s a mix of aggressive metal stuff along with just all out having fun metal… or at least that’s how it sounds. These guys have the chops and they seem to make it work. You’ll hear this on the Mosh Pit!

Mehida
Blood and Water
Napalm
47:48 - 11 Tracks
“Progressive Melodic Metal” according to the CD Sleeve, and upon first listen (with those keyboards going boop boop boop) that’s no lie. High pitched clean singing vocals (kind of like Ray from Fates Warning), some good distorted guitar, the keyboards (of course) and some solid drumming round this out.  But, all in all, it’s just another average power metal band. However, you might just hear it on the Mosh Pit!
